8 Fulfilling Ways To Make The Best Of Your Time Abroad

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Seize it.

One of the greatest opportunities you'll ever have in your life is the freedom and excitement of going abroad. For many of us who travel, we've watched our lives transform right before I eyes as we take in new scenery and become deeply involved in the communities we once only imagined to be a part of. It can be a little nerve wracking leaving everything you know and flying 20+ hours with 12-hour layovers and little sleep to a place that you're not even sure if you'll make it out alive. It might sound dramatic to some, but to others, traveling abroad is the scariest thing they've ever done.

There's nothing wrong with having fear. The problem lies in allowing that fear to paralyze you. You kinda have to walk right into it. Are you afraid that these people may not like you? Are you scared of not being safe? Well whatever your story is, read these tips to make the best of your adventure.

1. Keep a journal

Writing can be extremely therapeutic. I know for me, it's helped me sort out my thoughts and feelings, but I also think of it as a way to document important moments in my life. Who knows, your journal entries may come in handy one day if you ever think about writing a book. It may also get you out of depressing ruts, which can happen after an incredible traveling experience. Reading about a time in your life when you were on a spectacular high may resonate with you and inspire you to make some crucial changes, or book another flight!

2. Try something new

This can be anything that you've never done before or something you always wanted to do. Learn to make coffee from scratch, milk a cow, learn to cook a local meal. It doesn't always have to be something crazy like skydiving or bungee jumping. It's the little things sometimes that mean the most and last a lifetime.

3. Make an effort to talk to local people

Human connection is something we all crave. It also helps to have a better understanding of the human condition. When you take the time to learn about people, it makes them feel as though they're important. Especially when you're in a small village or town, most of the people there only communicate with those they see every day. You're a breath of fresh air and exciting with your own experiences and stories to share.

4. Go outside and explore

I've definitely been guilty of being afraid to go outside. Yeah it probably sounds silly, but there were days I wouldn't leave the house. I hated being stared at and looked at as if I was an alien, or just feeling completely alone and out of place. But the quicker you get out there and start getting comfortable, the less you'll notice all the minute things that bothered you before. If you're traveling solo and would appreciate the company, go to a local cafe or hang out spot and make some new friends to explore with.

5. Start a blog

When you write down details of your experience, the good and the bad, and you share that with other people, that's pretty powerful. You're offering others an insight into a coveted experience that many only wish they could take part of. Your journey might give someone else the inspiration to take that trip they've always dreamed of.

6. Take plenty of pictures

It's incredible to go back through your pictures and see your journey through a different perspective. Once you've been back home for a while, memories start to fade, but the pictures you have will always serve as a reminder to what you've accomplished. And you never know where these pictures may take you. I was once offered the opportunity to showcase my photographs in an exhibition. You never know!

Be mindful of who you're taking pictures and always ask first. Some people are not comfortable having their picture taken, but maybe they won't mind so much if you have a conversation with them first. And if possible, get their photo printed and give them a copy as a thank you for them sharing a piece of them with you.

7. Befriend other travelers

One of the great things about traveling is that you're able to connect with a diverse group of people that you probably would have never known had you not left the comforts of home. Learning about other cultures can do amazing things for your state of mind, and also lead you to some pretty cool opportunities. I've known travelers who were all from different countries, and after they their trip was over, they all met up again in another country to make new memories.

8. Take a moment and realize how far you've come

It's easy to get sucked into the whirlwind of this amazing adventure you're on. So every once in a while, just stop. Take a deep breath. Open your eyes and look around you... observe the faces passing you by, the way the sun is shining, the smell of the air. Remember, you've made it. Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a little credit for taking a chance.

Before you know it, your trip will be over and life as you know it will go back to it's normal tempo. So make sure you make the most of your adventure. Leave a lasting impression, but also keep those who touched your heart forever in your life. Stay connected and see if life allows your journeys to cross again.

So how about you? What are some ways you live your trip abroad to the fullest?
