“The kingdom of Uganda is a fairy-tale. You climb up … and at the end there is a wonderful new world. The scenery is different, the vegetation is different, the climate is different, and, most of all, the people are different from anything elsewhere to be seen in the whole range of Africa ... I say: ‘Concentrate on Uganda.’ For magnificence, for variety of form and colour, for profusion of brilliant life - bird, insect, reptile, beast - for vast scale — Uganda is truly the pearl of Africa.”
“Thanks Freddie! We had a really great time here! You made us feel very welcome, was great to meet your family, friends and to help out in the community projects. We loved Sam’s farm and Magalufa’s farm too. Uganda was a great experience, very colourful, cheeky and we loved everything about it x ”
“We spent a really nice week staying at Freddie and Edines and mixing with the other volunteers there was good fun. Their place is close to Mbale town centre and there were plenty of places to get food nearby and cafes with wifi in the town. We could choose to take part in some projects on farms in rural villages and a health clinic in the town. All were really interesting and the people very welcoming. It would have been great to stay longer and get more stuck in!It’s also a great place to get to other touristy places such as Sipi falls and Freddy was very helpful with our onward travel. We wish Freddie, Edine and Elijah well. Thanks for having us!”
“I spent two weeks at Freedies place and loved it a lot. Especially in the beginning of my stay I felt a bit uncomfortable - living in a total different world. Freddie was definitvely a reason why I got over my first doubts pretty soon. It was an unforgettable time and experience. ”
“My dear Freddie and the town of Mbale,You and your friends, family, other volunteers, and the beautiful town of Mbale made such a huge impact on my heart. My boyfriend Sean and I both had the pleasure to stay with Freddie during our month in Uganda. We met incredible people, locals and volunteers, who welcomed us into their homes and hearts. We spent most of our time at Sam’s farm. Sam is such a splendid person. He cares so much about his community and it really shows. I will miss the delicious ginger tea and cassava donuts- I became obsessed! The farm is also so, so beautiful. He has such a kind heart and such a bright family. If you love coffee, GO HERE! Learn about the story, how its grown, and the process behind it all. We also volunteered at an organization. We found out about this organization serendipitously from another volunteer that resided with us. It is in a town called Bungohko and is run by a woman named Janet who started the organization when she was only 22 years old. She is 25 now and has empowered over 3000+ woman all over Uganda. I am still in awe with all the incredible people I have met. Sam, Magolofa, Janet, and Freddie who all do such amazing work for their community. The volunteers i’ll always miss. I know not too far from now, we’ll all cross paths again!”
“First of all we would like to say thanks for Freddie to host us in Mbale and show us the projects. Unfortunately we did not have a long period of staying but Mbale and Uganda got a special space in our heart and we are already looking forward to the next visit. All the volunteers that stayed there are all nice and interesting people as well. We could make great friends there. During our staying we could spend more days in the farm helping them with gardening. We met all the family and the culture, they are lovely and welcome people. The children around the farm are amazing and we spent great time with them going to the falls and playing football. In the end we could leave a ball with the family so they can have fun playing football with their friends, and they loved! Thanks for every single moment ! You, your little boy and all your family are very welcome in Brazil.mChandler & Maria ”
“I just came back from a month working with Freddie, i spent most of the time in the Mugiti ¨school farm¨. Had a great time, whenever you need any kind of help, Freddie will make sure to provide it as fast as possible. A good guy to hang out with, he has managed to turn his apartment into a home away from home for volunteers, giving the place a hostel vibe, there are always a bunch of cool volunteers to hang out with, he was no doubt a great host for my first time volunteering through workaway!!!”
“My experience in Mbale with Freddie was memorable. He helped me with everything I needed and made me feel comfy in the town, with the other volunteers and locals. We became like a little family. My duties as a volunteer were to teach english and help the local farmers. I will never forget the people I met and the experiences we had together.Africa has a place in my heart and I’m pretty sure I will be back one day. Thanks Freddie for your humanity!”
“My partner, teenage daughter & I spent a few weeks at Freddie’s place end of April. He is a fun loving, out-going and down to earth kinda guy. We learned a lot about the cultivation of local foods & the challenges faced by local farmers. Sam, the owner of the farm was very welcoming and open to new ideas & knowledges that could improve the working of the farm. We even got to design and sow seeds for the start of an herb garden. The food was plentiful and Sam made sure that all his volunteers seriously participated in the eating! We met (2) young and ambitious teachers on site who, on our last day at the farm, sang a song they wrote to share how they felt about our visit...absolutely a joy to behold! Freddie after reading some of the other reviews, we feel like we truly missed out of the fun aspect of what Mbale has to offer! Next time we hope to return to Mbale and experience some of your adventures...and also Mt Elgon! To Freddie, Uganda and Her people...Thank you for hosting us...Blessed be! ”
“Wow Wow Wow ! Freeeeed ! Fred was awesome !It’s been definitely my best Workaway experience ever ! And i assume to say the best of my life !!First, Uganda is a fantastic country, red and green,it’s fascinating, Mbale, the greatest city in this country. Already promises a wonderful trip. Second, Fred welcomes you at his home, which is more like a homely backpacker’s and you are free to organize yourself as you want. It’s a friendly atmosphere, where you can share ideas, meals and beers of course. After a few days in the farms in the mountains and natural falls, where you grow coffee, ginger, bananas, lemon grass, we met Nathan, our second coordinator with who we decided to...build a school in his village with our hands within one month. And we succeeded ! Sweating a lot but it was awesome. On the afternoons i used to visit hiv patients in their villages and bringing them fruits, playing cards, sharing, it has been very emotionnal. Since then i’m still in touch with our school team : Hannes, Ricardo and Lennard who became my brothers as this building was our achievement for so many reasons, i’m so glad little kids from Nathan’s village are able to enjoy learning at that moment. We had lots of parties with Fred, Edine and the team : i really miss Uganda and them, i wish them the best in the future, and i will come back !!!!Thank you so much we had lots of fun. I’ll never forget.”
“I had the best time in Uganda. Staying with Freddie was easy and always fun, and all the people we met were so welcoming and warm-hearted. I miss Mbale already and hope to be back soon..:) ”
“FREDDIE!!! I stayed in Mbale for about a month this past October and it was for the most part wonderful!! Freddie was a great host and Mbale is a great place. I met so many amazing people that were also staying with Freddie or volunteering at other organizations... we had lots of fun and traveled a bit on weekends. I volunteered (mostly) at a farm... where I helped out at a school. Sam (the volunteer coordinator at the farm) was super sweet, but made it difficult to get much work done because he just wanted to talk to you, make you sit around, and feed you. But there are other places to volunteer... Freddie and Nathan explain different places and you can ultimately decide. I don’t think I decided correctly, but it was still worthwhile :)Do it. Why not? Just go to Uganda... you won’t regret it.”
“This was My second workaway in Africa and I Had a really good experience. You will live and work with a lot of like minded volunteers, which is great for going on weekend trips etc, You will always have someone to keep you company. I loved livng in Mbale and going to the 2 farms a few hours a day, Make sure to insist on working when visiting Sam because he will just want to feed you all day with his delicious food. Thanks to Nathan we began building a school, which I’m sure you can be part of in some way if you come, Teaching or building, Working on farms, visiting HIV patients, you will have a lot of thing to choose from, I Will remember my time here fondly, for evenyone thinking of going, you won’t regret it. ”
“had a great month in mbale, still thinking and dreaming about it regularly actually. freddie and nathan were great hosts and always gave us opportunities to do whatever we wanted. there are several different projects going on and its really up to you on how you want to spend your time. in some cases you will be leading projects, in some cases you will be just helping out, it depends what you feel comfortable doing. there are a lot of activities nearby that you’ll surely join with other volunteers in the house, and even across other volunteering organizations. making friends here is a cinch, and you’ll get out what you put in, in terms of having a good time. the city is safe, and i had no problem walking around with a flashlight past midnight. dont be too concerned about safety, just be a little smart and you’ll be totally fine. the people here are among the friendliest ive ever met in any country.”
